Tired of copying files over to worf or geordi and printing from the terminal? If you want to feel the magic of pressing cmd+p directly from any application and didn't succeed yet configuring the DESY printers on your MacBook, do the following steps:
1. Register your MacBook
You can only print on the local machines if your laptop is registered. For this,
- Send a mail to Eduard (eduard.avetisyan@desy.de) with your MAC address and your favourite nickname for your laptop.
- You can register both Ethernet and Airport MAC addresses.
- The MAC address can be found pressing at the apple icon (top left corner), then About this Mac, More information, then going to the menu Network on the left panel. Selecting the device (Ethernet or AirPort) on the top panel, you can read the MAC address on the bottom panel.
2. Add printer
- Go to System Preferences, then Printers and Fax.
- On the left pannel, click on the plus sign.
- On the new window, choose (if not by default) IP from the icons at the top.
- Fill out the boxes like this:
Protocol: LPD (Line Printer Daemon) Address: spool-lpr Queue: hmsps1
- Here, Queue corresponds with the actual name of the printer, as it can be found at the list of DESY network printers.
- More information about the printers, including the complete URL address, can be found at the CUPS-hep web page
- Once you've added the printer, you can check that the URL is correctly set by going again to the Printers and Fax menu, and clicking on the preferences. There, under General, it should appear a line with the following text:
URL: lpd://spool-lpr/hmsps1
