Welcome, Cadet, to HERMES Software Boot Camp. The goal of the five training missions is to teach you what you need to know in order to perform a physics analysis.

  • For new trainees, it is best to proceed in order through the tutorials.
  • For experienced operatives, these pages will hopefully provide you with a useful reference. The training codes in the ADAMO tutorial, e.g., contain working examples of all the ADAMO and DAD commands you ever are likely to need. Also, the Analysis Usercodes section contains working programs that you can use to get started immediately with an analysis.

These training missions are tutorials, not manuals -- they are not intended to provide a 100% complete reference on any subject. Rather we hope to get you up to speed as efficiently as possible, while still teaching you most of what you are likely to need. When you get going with your analysis, you may well find yourself in need of further detail on a particular subject. The tutorials point to places where you may find more information ... manuals and dedicated web pages are available for many topics. However the final (and sometimes the only) documentation for any piece of software is the source code: in the words of the old hacker epithet, "Use the Source, Luke". Do not be afraid of source code ... it is easier than you might think to glean information quickly from a big grep for a particular variable or word.

There is a great deal of information in these pages. Please do NOT try to memorize everything in your first reading, but do read through everything once. This will give you an overview of what's important, and you can always come back later for the details.
